Recently I got an .MKV HDTV file with MPEG-4 AVC (h264) video and two AC3 audio tracks. The bad thing was that the .MKV file was 10MB larger than a single layer DVD disc, i.e. it was 4,38 GB instead of 4,37GB I could fit into the DVD disc.
The problem was that many applications still didn't support files larger than 4,37. Also MPEG-4 AVC (h264) is not always supported even with a single audio track.
I didn't want to re-compress the video. Splitting MKV was the only option. Luckily the video had a dozen of useless seconds at the end.
I tried freeware avidemux (Windows) first. It was slow, didn't seem to support 2 audio tracks, besides I got several dialog windows asking me about indexing and other stuff that I didn't really want to see.
Then I tried freeware mkvtoolnix (Windows, Unix). It did the job perfectly!
mkvmerge GUI from mkvtoolnix has some disadvantages:
you can split after a given amount of time, but you can't split after several given amounts of time;
you can't preview the video in the mkvmerge, so you need to launch a player and remember the time when you need to split.
But it is fast. It support MPEG-4 AVC even with two audio tracks, so I recommend it!

SKY-HDTV on Ubuntu
Ubuntu 8.04 can detect cx23881 chipset automatically.
but It doesn't have tuner information.
so, let ubuntu know which tuner is used.
sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/options
add following
# set sky HDTV
options cx88xx card=31 tuner=64
reboot and now you can use your tv card.
sudo modprobe cx88-dvb
sudo apt-get install dvb-utils
scan /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256 > channels.conf
if you want to use kaffeine as tv viewer
sudo apt-get install kaffeine
and convert channels.conf file in your home directory into kaffeine's channels.dvb file.

biosdecode is a command line utility to parses the BIOS memory and prints information about all structures (or entry points) it knows of. You can find out more information about your hardware such as:

dmidecode - Read biosdecode data in a human-readable format
Data provided by biosdecode is not in a human-readable format. You need to use dmidecode command for dumping a computer’s DMI (SMBIOS) table contents on screen. This table contains a description of the system’s hardware components, as well as other useful pieces of information such as serial numbers and BIOS revision. Thanks to this table, you can retrieve this information without having to probe for the actual hardware.

recover GRUB
This procedure only can be applied for the case your system is under following condition.
1. Using a dual boot with other OS
2. Your boot loader was installed in MBR of hard disk.
If you installed windows OS on dual boot environment, you will not be boot into linux.
Windows was made for the case only one windows OS is installed in your computer.
Here goes the recovery procedure.
1. Boot with Ubuntu live CD.
2. in the gnome, check that your linux partition is shown in the Places - computer.
3. Open the terminal.

two way to resize multiple images in linux
There are lot of utility to resize the image.
but most of them are too heavy and even a commercial one.
In linux, anyone can resize multiple images at one command line.
If I have 200 JPG pictures of 3872x2592 (10 Mega pixel) in 'photo' directory and want to resize all the images into 50% size (1936x1296), Choose one of the following methods.
each method use a convert command provided as a part of imagemagick package.
so you have to install imagemagick first.
sudo apt-get install imagemagick.
1. Using shell script.
photo$ for k in $(ls *.JPG); do convert $k -resize 1936x1296 -quality 100 re_$k; done
2. Using find command
photo$find . -name “*.JPG” -exec convert '{}' -resize 1936x1296 -quality 100 re_'{}'\;

Gutsy gibbon IM setting
I installed gutsy gibbon by upgrade.
at feisty,first changed /etc/apt/sources.list file.
replace all "feisty" into "gutsy" using ":%s/feisty/gutsy/g" command in vi.
and "sudo apt-get update"
and "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade".
that's all and it will takes about 40 minutes in my pc.
I installed english and korean language.
but log-in as english setting in GDM does not accept me to use korean input.
so I googled about solution.
Here's my soulution.
$ sudo apt-get install scim-hangul im-switch ttf-unfonts ttf-alee
$ sudo im-switch -z en_US -s scim-hangul
this command make you use korean input in en_US locale.

"The key to hooking up is the networking thing," Lavinthal says. "And alcohol has a lot to do with it -- people don't really hook up at Starbucks. There's the group that's getting married and the group that's hooking up -- it's what everyone's doing now."
Lavinthal and Rozler discuss the joys of casual sex with Playboy.com, from the rules of drunk dialing to friends with benefits.
THE APPROACH
"In a bar, a guy shouldn't approach a girl he flat-out doesn't know," Lavinthal advises. When girls are out having fun, they might want to meet a guy, but they don't necessarily want to be cornered by a stranger. "There should be some kind of connection to that person," she adds, "so it makes the girl feel like this isn't some random guy she's about to go home with." It's like networking for a job, but more fun. Make sure you have references -- someone who can vouch for you.
NOT ALWAYS SEX IN THE CITY
Guys should not assume they're going to get laid. "Sex isn't always going to come into play when you're hooking up. Hooking up means a wide variety of things," Rozler explains. "There's the hookup in the bar, when you're sucking face," Lavinthal adds, "and when you leave, you say, 'I hooked up with him.'" A hookup that lasts a few weeks or more will usually end up in a sexual relationship, but girls still make some kind of rule about that. Hooking up is not all about sex.

"A girl feels more comfortable at her place. It's the 'stuff' factor -- we need our stuff," Lavinthal says. "You're likely to get more ass if you're at her place. Girls are uncomfortable with the whole bathroom situation at a guy's place, as well as the walk of shame home from his place. If you're at her place, she'll feel more in control and safer."
THE EX FACTOR
Hooking up with an ex can be fun and effortless. "This is playing so dirty, but it's very easy to get yourself back in there," says Lavinthal. "You have to say things like, 'We clearly didn't work out as a couple but we always had so much chemistry.' Since you're already 'in,' the 2 a.m. drunk phone call usually works." If you do hook up with a recent squeeze, the authors counsel that you nix talking about friends and the future, and that you try to avoid spending the night.
TEXT SEX
"Text messaging is an integral part of hooking up," says Rozler. These days, it's okay to make plans via text message when you're meeting out at a bar, but if you want the hookup to have longevity, pick up the phone and put in some calls. Or even send an e-mail. Lavinthal adds that, "Girls just by nature get a little annoyed when it's just text messaging. A phone call shows that, while you might not be boyfriend and girlfriend, you'll actually take the time to dial her friggin' number to talk to her."

텍사스 유적 공원

Heritage Society in Sam Houston Park는 다운타운의 서쪽에 20에이커에 걸쳐 자리하고 있는 공원. 공원관리는 the Harris County Heritage Society가 맡고 있으며 1823년에서 1905년에 걸쳐 지어진 8개의 역사적 건조물이 있다. 이중에는 작은 교회도 포함되있다. Old Place라고 게시된 것은 이 지역에서 가장 오래된 건축물이다. The Museum of Texas History도 이곳에 자리하고 있다. 이 박물관에서는 다양한 전시회들이 열린다. 뮤지엄 옆에 위치한 The Long Row에는 선물가게와 차 마시는 곳이 있다.

Port of Houston은 90km의 Houston Ship Channel가 미국에서 3번째로 규모가 큰 항구를 멕시코만까지 연결해주고 있다. 세계각국으로부터 5000척 이상의 선박들이 매년 휴스턴항을 드나든다. 관광객들은 Sam Houston 유람선을 이용하면 항구와 운하를 더 잘 볼 수 있다. 배들이 항구를 지나가는 것이 가장 잘 보이는 곳은 게이트 8번의 rvation deck이다. 1945년을 거슬러 올라가보면 보통의 의료시설을 갖춘 병원에 불과했다. 그러나 오늘날은 세계에서 가장 큰 규모의 의료시설을 갖춘 650에이커에 달하는 거대한 단지를 이루고 있다. 14개 병원, 수많은 리서치 센타, 의학과 간호학교들이 이 단지에 들어서 있다. 세계곳곳으로부터 온 환자들에게 최고수준의 의료서비스를 제공한다. 센터에서는 교육과 기술 투어를 마련해놓고 있다.투어는 월-목 10 am와 1 pm, 금요일 10 am 투어시간 1시간. 예약을 해야하며 최대 투어수용인원은 19명.

1900 년대 기찻길 옆의 작은 마을이었던 올드 타운 스프링은 현재 150 여개의 크고 작은 갤러리, 상점과 레스토랑들로 이루어진 쇼핑타운으로 이루어져 있다. 1900년대의 텍사스 마을의 고풍스러움을 느낄 수도 있고 아기자기한 수공예품과 골동품들로 인해 색다른 매력을 느낄 수 있는 곳이다.
휴스턴 동물원

Houston Zoological Gardens이라 불리는 이 동물원에서 가장 사람들의 이목을 집중시키는 것은 단연 흰 호랑이다. 이곳은 사람들로 붐빈다. 이외에 고릴라와 트로피칼 버드하우스도 인기있는 곳이다. 트로피칼버드하우스에는 200여종의 새들있으며 새 사육장안을 자유롭게 날아다니는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 아이들에게 특별한 즐거움을 선사하는 곳 중에 애완동물로도 가능한 온순한 동물들이 모여있는 Discovery Center와 Wortham World of Primates 등이 있다. 투어시간은 대략 2시간이 소요된다.

라파예트
라파예트는 루이지애나 남서부에 위치한 도시로 독특한 케이준 및 크레올문화, 프랑스어를 보존하고 있는 등 프랑스의 향기가 짙게 느껴지는 도시이다. 지리적으로는 인터스테이크 10번(I-10)과 49번(I-49)의 교차점에 위치하고 있으며 대도시로 치면 뉴올리언즈와 휴스턴의 중간지점쯤에 위치해 있다. 멕시코만에서는 북쪽으로 35마일 지점.

뉴 올리언즈
뉴올리언즈는 루이지애나주의 남동부에 위치하고 있는 미시시피 삼각주에 발달한 무역항 도시로 미국에서 뉴욕의 뒤를 잇는 제2의 항만 도시이다. 미시시피강의 입구에서 약 170Km 정도 위쪽에 자리하고 있다. 프랑스와 스페인 도시로 번창했던 옛 도시의 면모를 엿볼 수 있고 변화하는 문화적 배경으로 이국적인 정취를 풍기는 도시이다. 1682년 프랑스의 탐험가 러셀에 의해 발견되었고 미시시피강 지역이 그 당시의 프랑스에 의해 개발되었다. 1763년 프랑스는 루이지애나의 땅을 스페인에 양도하여 뉴올리언즈도 40년간 스페인의 영토에 속하게 되었다. 40년이 지난 1801년 다시 프랑스의 영토가 되지만 2년이 지난 1803년 나폴레옹에 의해 미합중국에 양도되었다. 그 때의 미국 대통령은 제3대 토머스 제퍼슨이었다.

미 시시피 강 근처 커낼스트리트의 끝에서 독특한 형태의 고층 빌딩을 발견할 수 있는데 이것이 바로 세계무역센터(World Trade Center) 건물이다. 무역 회사와 외국 영사관이 입주해 있고, 31층에 전망대, 33층에 회전식 칵테일 라운지가 자리잡고 있다. 31층의 전망대에서는 미시시피 강, 프렌치 쿼터, 센트럴 비즈니스 디스트릭, 퐁챠트레인 호수를 한 눈에 볼 수 있어 관광객들이 즐겨찾는다.

1826 년에 지어진 보르가드-키이스 하우스Beauregard-Keyes House)는 찰스 스트리트에 위치한 19세풍 대저택으로 시대를 풍미한 유명인들이 거주했던 곳이다. 1944년 소설가 프란시스 파킨슨 키이스이 이사온후 복원을 시작하였고 이곳에서 몇권을 책을 써냈다. 연중 꽃이 만개해 있는 벽으로 둘러싸인 아름다운 정원이 있다.

잭 슨 광장위로 높이 솟아 있는 세인트 루이즈 대성당(St. Louis Cathedral)은 1794년에 완공된 미국에서 가장 오래된 교회로 세개의 첨탑이 있는 스페인식 건축양식으로 만들어진 건물이다. 그림으로 장식된 천정과 벨기에제 제단이 볼만하다. 이곳은 수천의 뉴올리언즈 시민이 예배를 드리고 있는, 아직까지도 활발한 교구활동을 하는 성당이다.
세인트 루이즈 대성당의 현재 모습은 사실 세번째로 지어진 것이다. 첫번째 교회건물은 1722년 태풍으로 파괴되었고, 프렌치 쿼터에 있던 거의 모든 건축물들이 소멸되었던 1788년 화재때 두번째로 파괴되었었다.

시티파크

시 티파크(City Park)는 뉴올리언즈 북서쪽 1,500에이커에 자리하고 있는 미국내에서 5번째로 큰 규모의 도심공원이다. 공원내에는 식물원, 인공호수, 미술관 등이 있어 자연의 아름다움을 감상하는 것은 물론이고 예술의 아름다움 감상의 기회도 제공하고 있다.
시티파크는 100여년전 뉴올리언즈의 교육계의 후원자였던 자선사업가 존 맥노우(John McDonogh)가 시에 100에이커의 부지를 공원으로 조성할 것을 조건으로 기증하여 만들어졌고 현재는 1,500에이커의 넓이를 어우르고 있다. 한해 평균 1,400백만명의 방문객이 공원의 웅장한 오크나무와 그림같은 동상과 분수, 오래된 건물들을 둘러보거나 골프, 낚시, 보트타기 등의 스포츠를 즐기고 돌아간다.

잭슨 스퀘어(Jackson Square)는 프렌치 쿼터의 중심에 위치한 광장으로 역사적인 건축물들로 가득하다. 광장 중앙에 잭슨 장군상이 있고, 정면에는 세인트 루이스 대성당이 있다.
화가들이 자기가 그린 그림을 세워놓고, 즉석에서 초상화를 그려주고, 가끔 재즈 콘서트도 열린다.
◈The Cabildo
The Cabildo는 1795년 스페인 정복자들이 식민지 정부 건물로 사용할 목적으로 건설하였다. 미국이 프랑스로부터 미시시피강 분지지역의 서쪽을 사들인다는 내용의 계약이 사인된 곳이기도 하다. 이 구매후 The Cabildo는 뉴올리언즈 시의회 건물이 되었다.

프 렌치 마켓(French Market)은 미시시피강 연안 노스 피터스 스트리트(North Peters streets)와 데카터 스트리트(Decatur Streets)를 따라 수 블록에 걸쳐 자리하고 있는 시장으로 미국에서 도시에 들어서 있는 가장 오래된 시장이다. 이곳에 가게는 벼룩시장, 멕시코인이나 인디언들의, 레스토랑, 카페 등이 있다. 프렌치 마켓에서는 끈질긴 흥정을 통해 가장 좋은 물건이라고 생각되는 것을 구입할 수 있다. 주말에는 벼룩시장이 들어선다.
이 지역은 유럽인들이 정착하기 이전에도 촉토족 인디언들이 무역 거래가 이루어졌었다. 스페인인들이 1771년 세웠던 최초의 빌딩이 1812년 태풍에 의해 파괴되고 난후 건물의 뼈대는 그대로 두고 가판들이 들어서기 시작하면서 프렌치 마켓이 생겨난 것이다. 프렌치 마켓은 매일 오전 9시부터 저녁 6시까지 연다. 프렌치 마켓 인포메이션, 비지터 센터는 1008 N. Peters St.,에 위치하고 있으며 전화 504/522-2621이다.

정식명은 뷰 카레(VIEUX CARRE). 버본거리와 로열거리를 중심으로 한 크레올요리를 선보이는 오래된 식당, 나이트클럽, 바, 선물상점 등이 늘어서 있으며 19세기의 분위기가 짙다.
뉴올리언즈는 미국에서 두개뿐인, 술집이 문을 닫는 시간이 법으로 규제받고 있지 않은 도시이다. 프렌치 쿼터(French Quarter) 특히 버번 스트리트(Bourbon St, 이름만으로도 어떤 거리인지 알 수 있음)는 바로 그 증거지로 낮에는 산뜻한 레스토랑, 5성급 호텔, 골동품점, 옷가게 등이 들어선 거리이지만 밤이되면 사정이 좀 달라진다. 무허가 스트립 술집과 라이브 음악 클럽들이 불을 밝히며 이 거리는 술을 마시고 흥청대는 사람들로 넘쳐난다. 그렇기 때문에 밤에 이곳을 방문하려는 사람은 어두운 골목같은 곳은 피하는 것이 상책이다. 왜냐하면 어두움 뒤편에 강도들이 도사리고 있을지도 모르기 때문이다.

가 든 디스트릭트(Garden District)는 1840년대에서 70년대사이의 건물이 즐비한 지역이다. 세인트 찰스 애비뉴와 매거진 스트리트 사이의 잭슨 애비뉴에서 루이지애나 애비뉴에 이르는 지역. 푸른뜰과 화초로 꾸민 울타리가 아름답다. 일반인에게 공개하는 주택은 없고 밖에서만 돌아볼 수 있다. 이 지역을 지나면 양쪽에 고급 주택이 줄지어 있다. 성과 같은 웅장한 저택에서부터 동화에나 나올 듯한 사랑스런 집까지 다양한 풍경이 전개된다. 장 라피드 국립역사공원에서 주최하는 무료 도보 투어를 이용하는 것이 가장 편하게 이곳을 둘러보는 방법이다.

오 듀본 동물원(Audubon Zoo)은 미국내에서 가장 좋은 자연환경을 지닌 동물공원 가운데 한 곳이다. 동물원은 뉴올리언즈 다운타운 남서쪽에 위치한 오듀본 공원안에 자리잡고 있다. 그리고 오듀본 공원은 세인트 찰스 애버뉴에서 미시시비강까지 약 42만평에 달한다. 1,500여종이 넘는 동물을 볼 수 있으며, 사자, 백호랑이, 열대조류, 거대한 악어가 서식하는 루이지애나의 습지 등을 구경할 수 있다.

나폴레옹 하우스(Napoleon House)는 뉴올리언즈 지역 작가들과 예술가들에게 오랫동안 사랑을 받고 있는 곳이다. 특히 늦은 오후 이 곳의 안뜰은 지나가는 행인들을 구경하기에 안성마춤인 장소이다.
1814년에 프랑스 공화당 지지자들이 엘바로 유배된 나폴레옹 보나파르트를 구출해 이곳으로 옮겨올 마음으로 만들었다는 이야기가 전해지고 있지만 반대바들은 나폴레옹의 사후에 지어졌다는 점을 지적하고 있다. 현재는 바와 카페로 사용되고 있다.
